On tour with The Touring Club

In early October I will be leading a group of 16 people in a quick tour across Italy. In five days we’ll visit Rome, Tuscany and Florence. We’d love to have more time, but other plans follow, so we’ll pack a lot into our brief time in those historic places.

On October 7 nineteen of us will board the cruise ship Azamara Quest in Venice for a ten-day cruise around Italy and to the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. Here’s our itinerary:

Thursday, October 1: Fly away!

Friday, October 2: Arrive in Rome, tour the Forum, the Colisseum and the center of ancient Rome.

Saturday, October 3: Explore Rome and tour St. Peter’s basilica and the Vatican Museum.

Sunday, October 4: Tuscany! We will visit Cortona and Siena, then spend the night at a country inn just outside San Gimignano.

Monday, October 5: We’ll move on to Florence. Here we’ll view wonderful art, taste delicious food, and enjoy the ambience of one of the world’s most interesting cities.

Tuesday, October 6: The day begins with a guided walking tour of Florence and ends with a visit to the Uffizi museum.

Wednesday, October 7: On to Venice and our cruise! After checking into our ship, we’ll meet a guide for a walking tour of Venice, then a sunset gondola ride.

Thursday, October 8: A day to explore Venice before setting sail at sundown.

Friday, October 9: Today we’ll explore the unique, 1500-year-old churches of Ravenna Italy.

Saturday, October 10: In Croatia! We will tour Split and Trogir. These are ancient Roman cities that still live today.

Sunday, October 11: A very special tour today in Montenegro.

Monday, October 12: We’ll have a day on the island of Corfu.

Tuesday, October 13: We off in search of the Oracle of Delphi.

Wednesday, October 14: A day of rest; a day at sea as we round the “boot” of Italy.

Thursday, October 15: An all day tour of the Amalfi Coast: Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, etc!

Friday, October 16: Maybe the Isle of Capri, maybe Pompeii and Naples? It’s the cruisers’ choice.

Saturday, October 17: Return to Rome for one last day and night in the “eternal city.”

Sunday, October 18: Home again.

You can follow our adventure here. If we’re not too exhausted and if the Internet cooperates, we’ll post daily reports as we travel. I’ve also just launched a Facebook page where we will post lots of pictures and comments. Please, click here to see it -- our pictures will begin appearing there about October 2.

As we tell you about our adventures, we encourage you to send us your comments, either by leaving them here or by joining us at Facebook. Hope to hear from you soon!
